Dave Smith, Strategy & Commercial

Picture
Dave Smith with Wise Susie,
his TV Trophy Runner Up

Name:
Dave Smith

Age: 52

Current Position/Interest in the sport:
Small hobby owner‐trainer, also run GreyhoundScene forum and GreyhoundsForSale sales site.

Local Track: No local track so it's an away day wherever I go racing.

Favourite Track: For atmosphere I love Sunderland on a Friday night, Henlow for grass roots racing.

How did you get involved & how long have you been involved in greyhound racing: Bought my first dog in 1985, took out a trainer's license a few months later.

Favourite dog: Tobys Mate, who I bought for a bargain £150 after it was advertised on my sales website, he had upset his owner by easing up in a graded race at Sunderland. I had him schooled over hurdles and sprinted him between hurdles races. He won 7 opens at 5 different tracks, Walthamstow, Crayford, Wimbledon, Coventry and Henlow - the best £150 I ever spent. He is now enjoying retirement in Wales with a friend, Paul Watkins, with 2 of my other retired racers.

Current dogs owned: None at present

Best moment in Greyhound Racing: Wise Susie finishing runner‐up in the 2007 TV Trophy behind Greyhound of the Year Spiridon Louis.

How can greyhound racing be improved and what, in your opinion, are its main problems:
Something has to be done to keep small trainers in the sport, without them there is no future for the sport.

Why did you join GOBATA:
To do what I can to ensure the sport has a future for all owners, trainers and breeders.
